The
Two Sides of Life (Part 1)
There are two sides to everything in life and as a
result we are blessed with the privilege of choice. We can choose to dwell on
the negative side of life or we can choose to dwell on the positive side.
The negatives in today’s world is at times so
overwhelming that it is so easy to give in to our natural intuition, which is
to fear, cry, run and hide or to become stressed out and depressed. But Philippians
4:13 reminds us that we can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth us and 2
Corinthians 12:9 reminds us that God’s grace is sufficient for us: for His
strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Bearing in mind these two texts, how then should we
face life with its two sides?
Walk with me down to the valley of Elah, here you
will see the Philistine’s army camped against Israel and in the midst of their
camp you will see Goliath, the champion of their army. Goliath is no ordinary
man; he is a giant, full of big speech and his only agenda is to destroy the
Israelites. If you look closely you will also see the Israelites trembling in
fear as Goliath thunders his treats and demand a man of the Israelite’s army to
fight him. But look even a little closer, yes right there in the Israelites
camp, a youth who is ruddy and of a fair countenance.
What is he doing? Why is there no fear showing
on his face like everyone else and where is he going? Oh my word! Is he heading
towards the giant! Let us draw a little closer and see if we can hear what the
giant is saying to him.
1Samuel 17:43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am
I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves?
And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
1Samuel 17:44 And the Philistine said to David, Come
to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts
of the field.
Why isn’t he running? What is he saying to the
giant!
1Samuel 17:45 Then said David to the Philistine,
Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come
to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom
thou hast defied.
1Samuel 17:46 This day will the LORD deliver thee
into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I
will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls
of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know
that there is a God in Israel.
Are you serious David! Are you running towards the
Philistine? Look at his size! Look at his armor! Didn’t you hear what he said
he’ll do to you?
Yes David did run towards the philistine and yes
David did defeat him. Why? Because David look not at the impossible but the
possible and He knew that with men this is impossible; but with God all things
are possible. Matthew 19:26
Will you continue to look at the odds that are against you or will you now start to look to the hills from whence cometh your help?
